Northeastern Taiwan rattled by 5.7 magnitude quake, no immediate reports of damage

TAIPEI: A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck off Taiwan’s northeastern county of Yilan on Thursday (Aug 15), the island’s central weather administration said, with no immediate reports of damage.
The quake, which hit just after 5pm, shook buildings in the capital, Taipei. It had a depth of 9km, the weather administration said, and was just off its northeastern shore.
Mobile phone alerts were issued by the weather administration, warning people to “keep calm and seek cover nearby”.
Subway services in Taipei continued at a lower speed immediately after the quake, authorities said.
By around 5.30 pm, Taiwan’s National Fire Agency issued a statement saying there was “no report of major damages”.
The last major one occurred in early April, when the island was hit by a deadly 7.4 magnitude quake, which officials said was the strongest in 25 years.
At least 17 people were killed in the April quake, which triggered landslides and severely damaged buildings around the epicentre in the eastern city of Hualien.
